Ways to Prevent Shoplifting
Author: Bill Steward

Shoplifting is big problem for retail stores everywhere. Billions of dollars worth of product are stolen every year. On average, shoplifters report getting caught once out of every 48 times, and only half of those times are they even turned over to the police. This crime is very costly not only to businesses, but to society in general. The following are some ways to prevent shoplifting.

Setting up your store to reduce shoplifting doesn't necessarily mean you have to invest tons of money into all the latest technology. Certainly, if you can afford an the latest technology in anti-theft systems, then this will no doubt be very helpful and effectively reduce shoplifting. But there are little things you can do as a store owner or manager to deter shoplifting as well.

For example, just making a shoplifter feel like they are being monitored is helpful. This can be done by making the cashier's desk highly visible so the shoplifter can't hide from them. Also, install mirrors particularly in areas that are naturally more difficult for employees to see. This allows them to see anyone who might be stealing any merchandise.

Give consideration to where the clothing racks should be located. Shoplifters favor racks that are placed right next to one another so no one can see them stealing. Most thieves in this scenario are skilled enough to take a piece of clothing from the rack without being noticed. Even if security cameras or employees are around, they won't be able to see through the clothing racks to know what's going on.

The solution then is to have a lot of space in between racks, or at least as much as possible. Also, choose the racks that hang the clothing on the outside. Also, keep them away from the exit and entrance to discourage theft. Have your employees ask customers if they need help.

Small, expensive items can be placed in display cases for additional security. Always be sure that the doors to the cases are locked. Laminated glass is a good way to go because of its strength.

Security guards will make a shoplifter think twice about stealing. They are especially helpful at stopping pushout theft, which refers to a thief pushing their shopping cart out the door without paying. Standing at the exit of the store, a security guard will make sure no one leaves without having paid first. However, you will have to hire multiple guards and this can be costly over the long run. Nonetheless, it's an option.
